The Bartow Prize for Ecopoetry
Submit manuscript by December 15
One prize of $1000, publication, and 30 author copies will be awarded annually to a full-length collection of ecopoetry.
Named for the poet and conservationist Stuart Bartow, the prize will go to an author whose work centers nature, ecology, how environment shapes consciousness, and/or responsibility to the natural world.
Use our online submissions manager (see the link in Guidelines) to submit a manuscript of 48-80 pages by December 15 with either a reading fee of $25 or the purchase of a book at wordworksbooks.org. (Please forward your receipt to michael@wordworksbooks.org so that your submission can bemarked “Paid.”)
MaKshya Tolbert, author of Shade is a Place, will judge in 2026.
More About Stuart Bartow
Stu worked tirelessly to protect watersheds in his region of upstate NY. Teaching and serving as president of the Battenkill Conservancy still left him time to publish six books of poetry and to paddle, fish, and rescue strays. He volunteered as a reader at The Word Works for many years, reviewing submissions and sharing his ear for the music of the word here and in the classroom alike.
