Always with the Questions!

$25.00

  • Why write poetry?
  • If there is no idea behind a poem, then what is the poem?
  • Why does my earnestness of intention intrude upon my earnestness of expression?
  • “Are all poems self-portraits?” Of course they are/are not and what’s your point?
  • Why use “utilize” when “use” will do, except that you think it sounds fancier?
  • What was discovered in writing this?
  • Do I read it a week after I’ve sent it out and think, “Holy crap, what was I thinking?”
  • How do we develop within ourselves an adept critical eye? No, really, that’s a question. Please tell me: How do I develop within myself an adept critical eye?
  • Inquire of every stinking word: Does it belong, does it add, does it move, does it shimmer, does it hold water?
  • Do I really know how to assess my own work? How do I know I can trust myself?
  • Ugh. Wasn’t it easier just to love the poem and ship it out and take the rejections as they came?
  • But is the key to writing better poetry writing more?
  • What is a poem, anyway?
